The response categories include all of the OMB  race categories as well as the one OMB  ethnicity category, with no arbitrary distinction being made between  race and  ethnicity . Because we also have self-identified  race /ethnicity data on the BRFSS, it is useful to look at the concordance between self-identified and socially-assigned  race . As seen in Table One, the question  How are you usually classified by other people in this country? maps well onto self-identified  race /ethnicity for the largest groups, with 95.2% of those usually classified by others as White also self-identifying as White, 93.4% of those usually classified by others as Black also self-identifying as Black, and 93.4% of those usually classified by others as Hispanic also self-identifying as Hispanic. When starting with how respondents self-identify to examine the distribution of socially-assigned  race (see Table Two), we also see good concordance for White and Black respondents, with 98.6% of those self-identifying as White also usually classified by others as White, and 93.5% of those self-identifying as Black also usually classified by others as Black. However, among those self-identifying as Hispanic, only 74.0% are usually classified by others as Hispanic, while 20.0% are usually classified by others as White. The presence of two sizable populations among self-identified Hispanics which differ in socially-assigned  race allows us to examine the impacts of socially-assigned  race on health in this group. The BRFSS does not include examination data, but does include an assessment of general health status ( Would you say that in general your health is excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor? ) which has been shown to be highly predictive of mortality and morbidity in previous studies. The bottom of Figure One illustrates the percent of respondents reporting  excellent or  very good general health status among three groups: Self-identified Hispanics who are usually classified by others as Hispanic, self-identified Hispanics who are usually classified by others as White, and self-identified Whites who are usually classified by others as White. The proportion of respondents reporting  excellent or  very good health among the Hispanic-Whites (55.1%) is intermediate between that proportion for Hispanic-Hispanics (39.4%) and White-Whites (63.1%). One sees the same picture if one looks instead at the proportion of respondents in each of the three groups who report  fair or  poor health (see the top of Figure One): The proportion for Hispanic-Whites (18.9%) is intermediate between the proportion for Hispanic-Hispanics (24.8%) and the proportion for White-Whites (12.7%). Looking back at Table Two, one notes that we can do a similar analysis of the impact of socially-assigned race on general health status among those who self-identify as American Indian or Alaska Native (AIAN), where 57.8% are usually classified by others as AIAN while 24.4% are usually classified by others as White. As seen in Figure Two, the proportion of self-identified AIANs who are usually classified by others as White (AIAN-Whites) who report  excellent or  very good health (66.2%) is very similar to the proportion of White-Whites who report  excellent or  very good health (63.1%) and double the analogous proportion for AIAN-AIANs (33.7%). These analyses demonstrate the impact of socially-assigned  race on health. That is, they demonstrate that how one is usually classified by others in this country affects something (daily life experiences? life opportunities?) that translates into differences in health as measured by self-assessed general health status. Including the question  How do other people usually classify you in this country? on the 2007-2008 cycle of NHANES will enable the same types of analyses using examination data as outcomes.
